William T. (Bill) Ward III | 1935-2023

Alumni Relations director, stalwart Ram

Bill Ward (B.S., ’57) passed away Jan. 26 in Fort Collins. He grew up in Texas before attending CSU, where he majored in physical education. After graduating, he worked briefly as a teacher and then became a cattle rancher in southern Colorado. In 1973, Ward jumped at an opportunity to serve his alma mater as president of the CSU Alumni Association and director of Alumni Relations. Highlights of his 11-year tenure included alumni trips to Hawaii, Mexico, the Grand Canyon, and the USSR. He left CSU in 1984, worked for Coldwell Banker/Everett Companies, and then moved to Pueblo in 1992, where he served as CSU-Pueblo’s director of development and alumni relations. Ward is survived by his wife, Donna, four children and their spouses, and many grandchildren.

Floyd and Lloyd Kerr | 1946-2023

Legends of the Hardwood

Floyd Kerr (B.S., ’69; M.Ed., ’76) died Feb. 4 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; his twin brother Lloyd (B.S., ’69) died May 29 in Bolingbrook, Illinois. They played together on one of the greatest men’s basketball teams in CSU history: the 1969 team that went to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. They were both drafted by NBA teams after graduation, and played professionally with the Harlem Magicians and in Belgium for a few seasons. Floyd returned to his alma mater to become an assistant coach from 1974 to 1980 and went on to become a highly respected college athletics administrator. He appeared briefly in the 1977 basketball movie, One on One, filmed in Fort Collins, and was inducted into the CSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. After basketball, Lloyd built a successful career in the health care industry. He also served as town trustee for the village of Bolingbrook for several years, remained active in the local chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and coached his sons in Little League baseball and community basketball.  PHOTOS: Left: Floyd Kerr | Right: Lloyd Kerr | Courtesy of CSU Athletics

Barbara Hyde Boardman | 1924-2023

Colorado Master Gardner founder, author

Barbara Hyde Boardman (B.S., ’72; M.S., ’72) died Jan. 14. She was the first woman to enroll in CSU’s horticulture program and ultimately went on to become the country’s second-ever female Extension horticulturalist. Born in Palisade, Colorado, she grew up in the fruit industry. Boardman helped launch the Master Gardener program in Colorado in 1975 with the goal of building a volunteer network of community horticulturalists who could share resources and support aspiring gardeners. She trained more than 500 volunteers for the program in Boulder County alone. Boardman also wrote four books and a weekly newspaper column on gardening, “Now Is the Time.” Donations may be made to the Barbara Hyde Boardman Endowment for the Master Gardner program at advancing.colostate.edu/extension.PHOTO: Courtesy Jane Sinton

Edward A. (Ed) Hoover, D.V.M. | 1942-2023

University Distinguished Professor, virus researcher

University Distinguished Professor Ed Hoover passed away March 1 in Fort Collins. A Chicago native, Hoover became head of the CSU pathology department in 1981. Over his 40-plus-year career at CSU, Hoover built the tradition of multidisciplinary biomedical research training for veterinarians and mentored more than two dozen graduate students. His laboratory developed the first successful vaccine for feline leukemia virus, now used to protect cats worldwide, and his work on prion diseases uncovered key details about transmission and detection of chronic wasting disease in deer and other animals. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2014, and the National Academy of Inventors in 2017 and received numerous other awards.
