Football star, scientist, stalwart Ram

Earlie Thomas | 1945-2022

Earlie Thomas (B.S, ’70; M.S., ’75) arrived at CSU from Denton, Texas, in 1967 as a walk-on for the Rams football team. He bounced back from an injury in the first game ever played in Hughes Stadium to be drafted by the NFL’s New York Jets in 1970, the year he graduated with a bachelor’s in entomology. Thomas played five years with the Jets while simultaneously pursuing his master’s degree at CSU, then played a year with the Denver Broncos before retiring. He was inducted into the CSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994, and coached young Fort Collins athletes in several capacities. Thomas joined the CSU faculty in 1984, serving for nearly 30 years as the head of Environmental Health Services, and worked with farmers across four states to help manage pest-caused crop damage. At age 57, Thomas began a second career on stage, first performing with retired CSU professor Thomas Sutherland at Bas Bleu Theatre in Fort Collins. Cowboy poet and large-animal veterinarian

Baxter Black | 1945-2022

Baxter Black (D.V.M., ’69) – cowboy poet, philosopher, large-animal veterinarian, and longtime NPR Morning Edition commentator – died on June 10 at his home in Arizona. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico. After graduating from CSU, he practiced as a veterinarian while honing his skills as a writer and speaker. Black’s first column was published in Colorado’s Record Stockman in 1980. Several years later, he made his way to public radio, and author and performer became his full-time profession. Black and his wife, Cindi Lou, announced at the end of 2021 that he would be retiring due to unspecified health problems.
