Carol W. Mosher | 1921-2022

Research chemist, CSU Honor Alumna

Carol Mosher (B.S., ’42) passed away Aug. 17, 2022, at the age of 101. After earning her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from CSU, she did graduate work in textile and organic chemistry at Penn State, a notable achievement for a woman in the 1940s. There, she met and married fellow chemistry graduate student Harry Mosher. They moved to Palo Alto, California, in 1947, where Harry joined Stanford University’s chemistry department, and Carol became one of the first research chemists hired by the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International). She built a 30-year career investigating the formation and activity of advanced chemical compounds, including anti-cancer agents. A 1989 College of Natural Sciences Honor Alumna, Carol was preceded in death by Harry and brothers Rolland (B.S., ’41) and Willard Walker (B.S., ’49). She is survived by her three children. Jean Murray Sutherland | 1934-2023

English teacher, most stalwart Ram

Jean Sutherland, widow of longtime CSU professor Thomas Sutherland, died Jan. 13, at home and surrounded by family. Jean was born in 1934 in Ames, Iowa. In 1956, after her graduation from Iowa State University, she married Tom and the couple came to Fort Collins where Tom joined the faculty of the Department of Animal Science. Jean taught English at CSU and in the Alternative Learning Center in Fort Collins, before taking on what would prove to be the greatest challenge of her life in 1983. That year, Tom accepted the post of dean of Agricultural and Food Sciences of the American University of Beirut in Beirut, Lebanon. His commitment to AUB students during the civil war culminated in Tom’s abduction in June 1985 by the Islamic Jihad, who held him in captivity for six and a half years. During this time, Jean remained in Beirut advocating for the return of all the hostages. Tom’s release in 1991 opened a new chapter for Jean, as they traveled around the United States to speak of their experiences. She wrote a memoir, At Your Own Risk, recounting those years in Lebanon, and enjoyed spending time with friends and family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hugh McKean

Hugh McKean | 1967-2022

Colorado House of Representatives Minority Leader

Hugh McKean (B.A., ’96) of Loveland, leader of the Republican caucus in the state House of Representatives and tireless champion for effective government and Colorado’s tradition of neighborliness, died suddenly on Oct. 30, 2022, of a heart attack. He was running unopposed in the November general election for a fourth term representing House District 51. McKean graduated from CSU in 1996 while working as an independent residential contractor across Northern Colorado. He was elected to the Loveland City Council in 2009, then the Colorado House in 2016, where he worked to bridge differences with Democrats and within the Republican Party to find durable solutions to local and regional problems. McKean’s daughter, Hanna, is studying agricultural economics at CSU. He is also survived by his son, Aiden, and his mother.
